If you are using a Wacom tablet, try using the brush tool with a calligraphic brush. Under the brush options is a pressure sensitivity option for varying the line width. Even using a bolder outline against finer "internal" lines will make your cartoons pop a little more. Check out this guys blog for great tips inking in Illustrator! http://cartoonsnap.blogspot.com/

Also try changing the line color of your palm tree trunk to none or a brown to send it in the background like your palm leaves.

Otherwise fun stuff. Hope the tips help.

Great take on the topic!
Maybe the sky could be "hotter", like it was a very strong sun.

I'm adapting in this horrid heat already. I feel the pain, I feel the pain. I think the illo looks kinda flat. I agree, varying line thickness would proooobably help.

Nice work!
The only (small) thing I noticed, is that everything has an outline (black or dark), except for the leaves of your palmtree.
But as I already said: it is a great piece.
